A Mix of Mixes

Younha Tell you what: To make up for the lack of updates lately, we’re going to do a NEW post EVERY DAY until Christmas ’09 (Christmas Day not included). Deal? Deal. Today we bring you an assortment of remixes. Not a mashup of mashups, not a potpourri of potpourri, but a mix of mixes. Let’s get started:

21 year-old Younha is a J-Pop and K-Pop sensation! At least, according to her wikipedia page:

Younha made her debut as an artist at the young age of sixteen. Nicknamed the “Oricon comet” for her success in Japan, she has released eight singles and two albums there with varying degrees of success. Several of her songs have been featured in anime and drama series.

Here she teams up with Kim Jo Han for a brilliant, soulful live performance of everyone’s favorite Christmas classic.

But then she teams up with Korean hip-hoppers Dynamic Duo for a remix which doesn’t sound a damn thing like the gem we all know and love. That is, until about 3 minutes in. Then that tinkley piano comes in and you know it’s about to get real. I don’t think I’d ever heard Korean rap before, but it’s kinda awesome. Sounds a lot like English rap.

Younha has 3 different sites (here’s the 3rd one), at 3 different labels, in 2 different languages – neither of which I speak. So I don’t know what she’s up to, but it looks like she’s got an album coming out called 3rd album part B which is a pretty awesome name.

Output Jack (brother of Kangaroo Jack???) put together this trance remix of Jimmy Eat World’s version. It’s pretty much what you’d expect: DA BOM!

Well troops, just like Vanessa Williams, we like to save the best for last. Audio maniacs Mixcutz have put together this Allstars Remix, which sounds like it’s taken the original version, the Crazy Frog version and 2 minutes of some crazy German guy giving a speech, and mixed them all together. There are other versions in there, but beats me trying to figure out who they are. Who knows? You’d need a tricorder to sort it all out.

Because of its sheer boldness, we’re giving this one the coveted Magical Snowflake Award. Remember those?

Caramelle, Jim Thornton and the Irish pop stars

CaramelleWell frankly, I’m a little annoyed no one told us about this version earlier. Mostly because this was posted to youtube and uses our banner, but they didn’t let us know about the song! Anyways, Caramelle is cute and does a R&B/hip hoppy version, it’s nice.

Jim Thornton does one of the best background party keyboard versions I think our staff has ever been lucky enough to listen to.

Jim Thornton – Last Christmas

This is quite a bit like the original, but in duet form. The thing is, with these fairly regular covers, it doesn’t give us much to write about. What we can say is that Kelly is in Bellefire and Stephen is in Boyzone, both Irish pop groups. Apparently both are popular in their homeland, Boyzone also launching the career of Ronan Keating, who briefly managed the the band Westlife, who also performed Last Christmas …and the cycle continues…

Riff Raff, Say Vandelay, Alkbottle, & Caught in the Act

Riff Raff One little bit of news, it looks like Taylor Swift’s “Last Christmas” is #2 behind Mariah Carey on the iTunes holiday music top songs. Way to go Taylor!

Ok, so if someone were to say to you, “Besides The Beatles, who else would you want to play ‘Last Christmas?’” You would probably answer Guns n’ Roses. But I bet your second choice would be AC/DC, right? Well today’s your lucky day! We don’t have a cover from AC/DC but they’re the next best thing the Aussie rockers, German band Riff Raff, who perform in the style of AC/DC! It’s pretty fantastic and there’s a whole album of songs done as if Brian Johnson and the boys laid waste to baby Jesus hymns. Buy it here.

Recently signed Augusta GA band, Say Vandelay, bring us a pop punk-ish version that starts off with hints of late ’90s keyboard rock, like Ozma, and finishes up with what I’ll call post-emo vocals, like Brand New might do. If that didn’t make any sense, then just listen to the song already, wouldja?

This comes from the annnual release “12 Bands of Christmas” produced locally in Augusta. Check it out here.

Next we have two live versions for you, that couldn’t be more different. Alkbottle is a rock band from Vienna, while Caught in the Act were a Dutch boy band. Alkbottle still cause trouble all over Austria while Caught in the Act split up in 1998 after only 3 years of success. I think these two polar opposite groups really show the appeal of “Last Christmas” across musical borders.

Grace Potter, Vinyl Devil & Coldplay

grace potterVermont-based Grace Potter and the Nocturnals performed this live in October of this year. Cutie-pie Grace and her group have a jazzy/rocky thing going on and apparently Bonnie Raitt calls them “One of the most soulful new bands around.” This was found on archive.org’s live show collection, which is to say the least, massive. You can find the rest of the show this track comes from here.

Vinyl Devil, well, uhm, this version is unsettling yet oddly hypnotizing, and I think it somehow made me unable to have children. Maybe.

Last year Coldplay caught the Last Christmas bug and offered their live acoustic take in video format on their website. It was short, sweet, and appreciated. This year we offer it in audio form.
