Solace, Griffin, Campbell and Frank

Corporate SolaceI think this is a first. Two covers by one band, not remixes. Way to go guys! Another plus is that they only record Christmas music. The first is a fun acoustic cover full of hijinx. It would seem that just a hint of the magic led them to do a more proper cover soon after that, thus version two, which is a little more difficult to classify. Their daring to try two covers earns them a Magical Snowflake!

You can download these, plus much much more Christmas music on their site.

Mr. Griffin earned his fame on, er, Fame Academy in the UK a few years ago and is known for doing comic song interpretations at live events. While I wasn’t doubling over in laughter during his take on “Last Christmas,” there are a few good lines in there.

This comes via a massive Alistair Griffin live show archive found here and you can find his studio albums on amazon.com

Will wonders never cease? Today we present to you “Last Christmas” as performed with a pan flute! And not to get ahead of ourselves, but we have a few more up our sleeves for later postings if this doesn’t whet your whistle. As for Gordon Campbell, we couldn’t find much info on him, but the album this comes from, Winter Dreams, celebrates with lots of other Christmas pan flute joy.

Something about this next version makes it one of my personal favorites. Louis Frank does salsa music, and rather than continuing to try and imagine what this might sound like just download it already.

Plas-tick, Ryan Creed, Pork Band

walrus music blogWe’d like to start by thanking The Walrus for doing a fun interview with us the other day. The Walrus has a lot of fun posts ranging from ’60s psych rock to new indie stuff to anything else you need to know about. Check ‘em out! And while we might have embellished a little about upcoming interviews with Fox News and MSNBC, we do have some other treats coming this year that we’re super excited about. Stay tuned!

And if you’re so inclined, listen in on KNDD tonight (approx 6:30pm EST) for some Last Christmas shenanigans!

Now if you’re like us, you’ve come to a point in the game where you’re feeling a little overwhelmed at 220 versions of the same song. Or maybe some of you missed all the fun last year and you’re not sure where to begin. Either way, we’ve come to a decision and need your help, dear reader. We’d like to package a “Best Of” with your suggestions, so please comment here or email us your top 10 versions and we’ll re-feature them in a special post. Sound good? Good.

If Plas-Tick’s electro-pop version sounds so good, you feel like you’ve heard it before, you have! Most people agree that last year Mon)tag offered one of the best, most genuinely distinct versions of the lot, so you can’t really blame Plas-Tick for wanting to base their cover on a surefire winner.

Berlin based Plas-Tick just released a Christmas EP (complete with Karaoke version of “Last Christmas”) which you can order from their site. UPDATE: This track is also available as part of a free downloadable album, Electric Fantastic Christmas available here

So this isn’t so much a band, as a party. At least that’s what we’ve been told. Mr. Creed held a party to record Christmas tunes, and that sounds awesome to us. I think that technically classifies this as choir music. To us anyways.

More joy awaits you on their Myspace!

Even after trying to navigate their Italian webpage, I still have no idea who or what Pork Band is. This particular recording is a live adaptation in which they decide to change “Last Christmas” to “La Scrima”…ok, I’m cool with that. And judging by the squeaky fart at 2:54 and the monologue halfway through, I’m guessing they’re some sort of comedy band?

Big Mix 4

So we’re past the 200 mark. That should count for something, right? Looking back to when we crossed the 100 track mark, we were right around 7 hours of music. Now, at 200 tracks, we’re at about 14 hours. What does it all mean??

Here’s something nice: Whitney from USA Today’s Pop Candy featured us again this year! And she even supported our long-time dream about a Shatner/Aguilera “Last Christmas” duet! (I know that sounds silly on paper, but seriously can you imagine how awesome that pairing would be?)

And just a quick question for ya’s — Is everyone downloading ok? I mean, we know A LOT of you are, but is this whole download service thing weird? If you’re having trouble, or have any suggestions, please don’t hesitate to email us!

OK on to business…

Basswood Dollies, The Faded Flower and Volta Masters

Basswood DolliesThis is electronic, a bit chiptune-ish even. It’s not fast like many of the electronic versions we’ve posted; it’s slow, steady, confident. It sort of reminds me of that Knife song, Heartbeats.

This comes from the Electric Fantastic Xmas album from Klicktracks which you can get for $1.50! You can also find Basswood Dollies’ new single on itunes.

Basswood Dollies —Last Christmas-

A new rock version for you rockers. This is a slow rocker though, Like Grandpa Frank’s sunday afternoon rocker. Or something.

Info is scarce on this version, as in we couldn’t find anything.

The Faded Flower – Last Christmas

This funky version samples Patrice Rushen’s “Forget Me Nots” liberally, but never to a fault. As interesting as this version is, the vocals seem placed. We haven’t heard the original mix, but you can find it on 7” here. Their myspace has new Christmas music and info on their other releases.

Volta MastersLast Christmas (So Good Remix)

Ok so this doesn’t really count as a new version I suppose, but it’s a little gem we didn’t include last year. The quality is crap, but for all you wham-a-phile’s this should be a treat.
