Hairy Bottlers and Cheetah Girls

Yesterday I was looking through the visitor logs and saw that somebody got here by Googling “What is a Pudding Mix?” That’s a really good question. What is a Pudding Mix? I’ve always assumed it’s either 1) a reference to Christmas pudding, or 2) a metaphor, comparing the thickness of pudding to the comparatively dense remix of the song. Does anybody know for sure? If so, please leave us a comment.

This first song another one where we’ll need your help. Itunes has this rocking version from The Hairy Bottlers. The artwork appears to be a complete rip from 3 Feet Smaller’s out of print A Very Special Christmas Day on which there is no cover of “Last Christmas.” This song is often labeled as coming from 3 Feet Smaller. There are no other songs from the Hairy Bottlers on itunes, and we can’t seem to find a website for the band. So far, this little snippet in German is the only connection I can find, and I have no idea what it says before the name-calling, “Also in der derzeitigen A1 Werbung (Mobilfunknetz in Österreich) ist eine Punk Version des Klassikers Last Chrismas zu sehen. Der Stimme nach müsste es 3 Feet Smaller sein, jedoch steht auf deren Homepage, das der Song von einer Band aus England ist 3 Feet Smaller. Now something about the Last Christmas Cover. The song is preformed by The Hairy Bottlers from England. We found out who these guys are and we can tell that they are by far the biggest assholes we’ve ever talked to.”

The Hairy Bottlers – Last Christmas

“This album is a perfect blend of pop bounce and Christmas sweetness. Don’t expect the best vocalists in the world on this album, but more R&B singing style on most of these songs, but it’s very consistent. I’m listening to it right now and I’m on track 11 of 13 I believe…They know their limitations and strengths, which is evident on their cover of George Michael’s ‘Last Christmas,’ where their style sounds perfect on the track.” I love amazon.com reviews! They do the work for me.

FLO, One, Tamlins, Triple image, Yuji and Butch

This one’s good. It’s nothing new in terms of how it’s done, but I imagine if Wham! had been one of those newfangled emo bands, like Dashboard Confessional, this is how “Last Christmas” might’ve turned out originally.

Feeling Left OutLast Christmas

Feeling Left Out’s entire Christmas EP is available for purchase at their online store which includes the Quicksand Jesus version of “Last Christmas,” but hurry, quantities are limited!

After some discussion, we decided that this is a fairly awesome disco version of “Last Christmas.” But deciding that it was disco wasn’t easy, since it straddles so many lines. On the one hand, that bassline and hi-hat are totally disco. But on the other hand, everything else in the song is not. Ultimately, the lack of any other disco in our collection put it to rest. Unfortunately, no information regarding the band is known, or if they’re even called One.

One – Last Christmas

This is much more upbeat than the reggae version we heard on Day 2, but with only slightly more reggae. The Jamaican accent helps their case, but not much.

The TamlinsLast Christmas

This version comes to us from Reggage Pulse 4: Christmas Songs found at good ole’ amazon.com.

What on Earth? This is what would happen if Kids Incorporated broke into Trent Reznor’s studio and recorded the Wham! classic. This song, in some way, summarizes everything that I love about this project.

The CD single import of “Turn it Up” with this version is available over at amazon

Yuji Oda is a Japanese actor and part-time musician, this being his most recent recording. Butch Walker, is a writer/producer who’s made hits for Avril Lavigne, SR-71, All-American Rejects, Lit, Simple Plan, Lindsay Lohan…jeez…He was even a guest judge on that Rock Star: Supernova show, and produced their album. Currently, Walker’s in-house producer, Russ-T Cobb is working with one of yesterday’s Magical Snowflake Award winners, Gates of Berlin on their new album. Coincidence?..

This is from Yuji’s “Last Christmas” single that has another Wham! inspired b-side. It’s available again, at amazon.com

Jimmy Eat World

Jimmy Eat World has created one of the more well-known versions. It really captures the spirit of the original, but it’s structured a bit differently. This version is also notable, because it has spawned its own versions (but more about that on later).

Jimmy Eat WorldLast Christmas

It was originally found on a 7” with a version of Prodigy’s “Firestarter,” but now you can find it on “The O.C. Mix 3” on amazon.com.
