Delaa, Studio 99, The Christmas Angels

This is crazy, I think this is the only hip hop version to actually rap the original lyrics! Señor Delaa does his thing over the Human Nature version and other than that, we don’t know much about his cover.

Delaa – Last Christmas

This is very much like the original Wham! version, but slightly more current. Studio 99 are one those, well, studio bands, who release albums with covers of all your favorite hit songs. They have collections of Barbars Streisand hits, ABBA hits, the Venga Boys (I know!) pretty much anyone who has ever released an album, has a Studio 99 cover album.

You can find nearly 1500 Studio 99 covers on amazon

I think the Christmas Angels are similar to Studio 99 in that they only exist to release inexpensive covers (though only Christmas covers in this case) however, their arrangements are incredibly more interesting.

And here is an updated version of the Wham vs. Modjo mix, which now includes Stardust (to it’s detriment I think)…

The Holy Night Orchestra, Bliss and Sugarcube

Jesus McMillan The Holy Night Orchestra by Jesus McMillan (maybe the best name ever?) deliver solid holiday party background tunes on their album “Merry Christmas.” This album is filled with mostly traditional holiday songs and “Last Christmas” and oddly enough “The Neverending Story”…

You can get the whole mp3 album on amazon.

We featured Sugarcube back in Year One and briefly mentioned the other versions available and Sugarcube’s danceability factor. Everything we said about them and their cover still hold true, but here are two more mixes.

Sugarcube Inc. – Last Christmas (Architechs Remix)

Sugarcube Inc. – Last Christmas (Cuva Remix)

If you’re a Sugarcube Inc. completist, you can buy this import single for $129…or you can download it for $4.95.

Bliss are a 6-piece vocal group from Switzerland and really pretty fantastic. Of all the a cappella covers we’ve featured, this may be my favorite. They have a weirdly funny/awesome cover of U2’s “With or Without You” to stream on their site, and perhaps best of all, an incredible delivery of the Golden Girls’ theme “Thank You For Being a Friend.”

You have to appreciate a band that has a sense of humor..

Acht, Bizons, and blasts from the past

Now to your left you can find a link to the complete list of artists featured on the site. It kind of takes the charm away from just having the list of artists who haven’t covered it, but the people have spoken!

This first version is from young German band Acht, who classify themselves as blues/funk. While their version has hints of that, it also sounds pretty progressive, like an early-2000s college band might have made this.

The Bizons, (pronounced BEE-zons as you’ll find out if you listen) created a frankly weird version. I mean, it starts out pretty regular, and then cascades into them just awkwardly singing their band name for the last third of the track.

Finally, we present you kids two different versions of tracks we previously featured. The first is an istrumental variation on Erdmöbel’s “Weihnachten” from last year. The second, is an incredibly remixed version of the Rap Allstars version from 2006. It’s not even in the same territory, honestly. It leaped from a pretty regular hip-hop take, to a sprawling, piano-driven, guitar-whining epic! It still uses GM’s original vocals which takes it to an even different level. Since I am best at expressing myself through metaphor (maybe) just imagine George Michael wearing a pirate blouse at the top of a gothic tower singing to the night sky, maybe there are dragons (the Allstars) circling the tower beneath him. Just imagine that for a minute…

Pham, Wham, Olission and Basti

Spiderman 3What begins as a pretty ordinary cover, quickly turns into magic as Pham Xuan Thang manages to meld the #1 and #2 UK Christmas songs from 1984. That’s right, “Do They Know It’s Christmas” follows “Last Christmas” and then gives way to “Happy Xmas (War Is Over) followed by…well…you’ll have to find out.

I wish we knew more about Pham Xuan Thang and his future medley plans, but the internet has failed us. All we can find is this set of holiday tracks on Imeem and his only photo comes via Spiderman 3. Huh?

I hate to admit my lack of hip hop knowledge, but I don’t know what Run DMC track has been smushed with Wham! to bring us this track. Worse, I have no idea who smushed them. But I like it.

We couldn’t find info on Olission, but we didn’t try too hard. And I guarantee he will dance your face off.

Olission – Last Christmas

A quick search of Mr. Interweb shows there are a number of men claiming to be Mr. DJ Basti, but we are going to attribute it to the only one quick enough to register the domain. Plus that guy is German.

And don’t you dare call it a mullet!
