Mini Break + Afentra + Songs

Apologies for the small break while we were right in the thick of things! While most of you will have little concern for this tiny bit of news, my brother recently graduated from UK with a PHD in food science, so we took some time to celebrate his new doctor-hood.

However, during that time, I was lucky enough to talk with Afentra from 96.5 the Buzz in Kansas City during her Big Fat Morning Buzz show. Thanks so much for the opportunity and the support over the years! Longtime readers will note Afentra contributed a version back in 2007 in a competition with then co-host Bam Bam. We’re reposting her version here again for awesomeness’ sake. And no, we have no intention of reposting Taylor Swift’s version.

Afentra – Last Christmas

Check out her blog and if you’re feeling super saucy listen live in the mornings via the 96.5 website!

And since we left you hanging for a few days, here’s a huge smattering of covers for your ear bleeding pleasures.

We start with the second most requested cover this year, Florence + The Machine. This haunting acoustic performance was recorded for a live BBC special from last year that got plenty of airplay over seas.

After Auryn alerted us to Oh Bijou’s version available at chromewaves, we were met with both joy and shame, as we were publicly called out for not posting this version sooner! While I certainly wish my eyeballs could see everything on the wires of the Inner-net, this is where you good folks come in by sending us what your eyeballs find that our eyeballs have yet to find. We’re all in this together! So enough of that, Canadian indie outfit Oh Bijou offer an indie, almost jazzy cover, that is definitely easy on the ears. Lead singer Casey Mecija has the voice of a pixie.

Oh Bijou – Last Christmas

Not to be outdone by the Celtic Woman Christmas phenomenon a few years back, dude crew, Celtic Thunder, volley with their own set of Holiday Tunes including none other than our beloved namesake.

Celtic Thunder – Last Christmas

Next we have a couple of Matt’s who are adding festive treats to our archive. Matt Cab does smooth…and I mean SMOOTH…covers of songs, and his LC is no exception. And Matt Foley confuses me, because it’s definitely a female singer…named Matt I guess…

And if you haven’t had your brain melt with awesomeness yet, may I submit our first ever Italo Disco version! This is by the aptly named Synthesizer Dance off the Christmas Edition album available in full here.

These next two comes via tips from Martin, whom from now on I’ll refer to as Mr. Christmas. So Mr. Christmas sent not one, but two new covers to us! The first is by 3773 from the huge Christmas collection available at Suburban Sprawl Music and the second is by Chancellor Arnold over at Arbor Christmas. If those collections don’t fill your playlist stockings for years to come, then you haven’t tried enough of the tracks! Don’t thank us, thank Mr. Christmas!

Yule Logs and Philco Brothers and Praise-a-pella

Here are three submissions we received that through the holiday rush unfortunately we were unable to get into article form until now. But let me tell you, hang onto these puppies for next years holiday mixes!

First we have a gem from The Yule Logs who are a new band dedicated to spreading holiday cheer (obviously). Their debut is out so give them support! Their version is a jazzy/rock sort of surprise. Highly recommended.

The Yule Logs – Last Christmas

Secondly, Philco Brothers, actually just one man named Jim, are a band out of Boston. Inspired by our site a few years he recorded his sweet ass version and passed it along! It’s somewhere between 8-bit and lo-fi but all parts amazing. Check out his myspace and thank him!

And here’s their version of another christmas tune, “Christmas Time” by the Dogmatics:

Lastly, Praise-Apella are a faith-based a cappella group whose version is pretty amazing. I am always impressed by a talented a cappella, group but this cover truly deserves some notice, check out their video below:

Apologies for the rushed nature of this post, but we didn’t want to leave you guys hanging! we still have many many more to share, and rather than wait until next year, we’ll do a couple big mix posts for you guys!

Faux Slang, Team Whatever, Starfire

Faux SlangWe’re back! And thank you for your suggestions on file hosting; we’re checking them all out as we hit crunch time. So we need to hit ‘em hard today and get you guys some quality covers to make up for lost time.

Today’s first cover comes via Last Christmas friend and Philly neighbor Philebrity who featured us last year. This year, they get in the action and present the world with Faux Slang, which they describe as having enough “early Teenage Fanclub sludge to mask the true pain that lies at the core of this sad, sad tune.”

Team Whatever give us what I believe is our first kazoo cover! Most precisely, the vocals are done via kazoo, which is rather charming actually. Frankly I’m surprised it took 3 years to come across a kazoo version.

You really have to appreciate a band with confidence. Firstly, Starfire’s myspace address is “starefireowns.” Secondly, their bio states, “Starfire is the collaboration of 2 of the most amazing pop minds of all time.” They only have this cover up on page though, so we cannot completely verify the accuracy of this statement. We can however declare that this is a good slow dance/pop version that would comfortably on your 2K8 holiday mix.

Rumblefish, The Enemy, Fox Force 5

RUMBLE PAINS Rumblefish are a Korean pop-rock group, with a great cover here. I think I call it great because there’s a certain familiarity in their version…It reminds me of an ’80s American family sitcom or something. This is probably only because it’s the instrumental version, the vocal version is great too though.

I think we are being duped here. While we completely love the Providence band The Enemy, we aren’t sure what the heck this is.

Ok so, Fox Force 5 presumably get their name from Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, but I can’t help thinking of Star Wars whenever I see this version come up.
