Globe Trotting

GummibarWe’re starting today with, well, a gummy bear. That sings. In yellow underpants. Gummibär is some kind of international kids singing sensation. Reminiscent of Crazy Frog, but a little less annoying kind of. I am just more perplexed by Gummibär than anything else. Why is he always in underwear? And if it’s for kids, why is he singing “Do you think I’m sexy?” Is this for adults? Maybe, there are a ton of club mixes for his songs…And why did Felix the Cat agree to do a duet with this whippersnapper? His videos have millions of hits but I have never heard of him, I don’t know if that makes me uncool or not.

Gummibär’s music is available on iTunes and Amazon.

And I’m pleased to present what I believe is our first ever bagpipe version! And while stylistically, it’s close to the original, there is something really interesting going on here. The Munros’ full album is great for you bagpipe lovers out there. They shine more on traditional tracks than pop covers in my opinion, but some of you may enjoy the novelty.

Munros – Last Christmas

The Munros Bagpipes at Christmas album is available on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon.

Uschi BlumAnd finally we’ll let Uschi Blum play us out with this German chilled out pop/dance version. Uschi Blum is the alter ego of Hape Kerkeling, a German comedian and actor. I’m not sure how this character, who first appeared in 1993’s Kein Pardon has a life outside of the movie. I guess Hape does appearances as Uschi? Or all his characters I guess. Who knows, but Hape make for a very unattractive woman.

You can grab Hape’s full Christmas album with songs by all of his other character’s over at Amazon.

If you were seeking answers regarding Gummibär, this video will not help.

Swearing at Motorists, Alcazar and Wielkie Jol

So I was not familiar with the stylings of Swearing at Motorists prior to hearing their slow, melancholic version they offered last free last year and thought they offered a nice version. So I looked them up on Wikipedia and I think someone in the band is having fun with their entry, otherwise I have no idea what this means:

Doughman mixes trace amounts of his own blood into the ink used in the disc printing process, pioneering the concept of the GrisD. Rumors persist that there was confusion over the term “serious chops” in his contract with Ol’ Scratch, and after some antics over semantics, can now grow sideburns to equal any cartoon samurai at will. Doughman’s documented penchant for sleeping in a topknot may be the source of such speak.

Swearing at Motorists – Last Christmas

You can find their most recent album, Last Night Becomes This Morning, on Amazon.

I’m always taken by the fact there are some huge international superstars that just never seem to hit ground in the US, but are serious business everywhere else. Swedish disco/dance group Alcazar has been making mega hits since 1999, and no one told me! While their cover of “Last Christmas” certainly remains faithful to the original arrangement, sadly it’s not nearly as interesting as the rest of their catalog. That is if you like to dance your face off! Which we certainly do here at LC-HQ.

Alcazar is a type of Spanish castle by the way.

Alcazar – Last Christmas

You can find this on the Deluxe edition of their album Disco Defenders.

And just when you thought we were all out of surprises…Polish label Wielkie Jol gives a pretty raucous rap-over of Wham!‘s version. I speak no polish, so I don’t know who for sure raps on this, but rapper TEDE owns the label, so he is probably on this, but I’m not certain. I feel like I already too much about this.

And you can watch Alcazar do a toned down version below:

Kerplunk? Kerplooie.

Let me begin by saying thanks to Unnecessary Umlaut for keeping the magic alive with his “Last Christmas” picks from our site’s years of collecting. If you just wanna cut to the chase, head to his site and grab his offerings, they are certainly some of the more top tier covers we’ve featured!

Today we’ve got a good set. I mean that too; I’ve no reason to lie at nearly 450 versions, do I? Well fine, don’t believe me, just listen for yourself!

Oh! AtomsFirst we have indie duo Oh! Atoms trying to entrance with their British charm and stripped down, yet still upbeat take on “Last Christmas.” This back and forth they have going had me thinking for a minute we might have the dual perspective type thing going, but no. I don’t think they’re singing about the same lost love though, they’re just covering the song. That’s it. Let’s not read too much into this people!

Oh! Atoms – Last Christmas

Hot on the sweet take heels of Oh! Atoms we have the super produced, radio friendly K-Pop vet 1sagain with Ju Bora. It looks like his first big hit came in 2002, and he is on some kind of comeback, thanks in part to this little ditty I’m sure. If you’re into the Ashley Tisdale, Foxxi MisQ or any of the international rap versions, then give this a listen! It’s kind of a combo platter of those, in spirit anyways.

When we first posted Feeling Left Out back in year one, it was with some regret that we only posted the original version of their Wham! cover. We can now put that regret to rest as here, finally, is the alternate, and ridiculous, Quicksand Jesus version of “Last Christmas.” It’s a reprise of sorts, but mostly some kind of six minute holiday frustration outlet. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Feeling Left Out – Last Christmas, Quicksand Jesus Version

Feeling Left Out is a now defunct acoustic indie duo led by Joe Wilson who’s still pumping out tunes. Check out the FLO website, which now just redirects to his new work.

Oh Juju! What a cute name. At least to me anyways, that’s what my wife calls our cat Julius. So you can see my fondness for the version based on name alone. Juju the singer is a cute Japanese singer who mixes a bit of reggae and lounge in her cover. This is from her 2007 release, Wish for Snow. Have a listen.

Juju – Last Christmas

Lastly, an interestingly named, and sounding, remix of the original…well done sirs…

Wham! – Last Christmas (Rynecologist Christ-Must-Jam Mix)

Yes! The literal version of “Last Christmas!” Thanks Jeff!

Total Protonic Reversal!

Oi vey, here we go! We hope to make amends here as we kick 2009. Waaaaaay back in ’06 we hastily labeled Dalida, “some french lady” without fully realizing her musical accomplishments. Dalida not only does she have the world first diamond record, 55 gold records and been honored on a postage stamp, but she also has what we’re calling the earliest cover version of “Last Christmas!” Her single for “Reviens Moi” was released in 1985, which beats Alex Montez & Centerfold’s 1989 cover. Dalida’s success story is also full of tragedy, but today we hope to make up for our past dismissiveness.

Dalida – Reviens-moi

Reader Daniel tipped us onto this version by Ukrainian boy band 4 Kings. A little funky, a little dancey, a little like many of the others we’ve heard. At this point in game boys, you’re going to need to do something to stand out.

4 Kings – Last Christmas

Take I’m So Look You for instance. This cute little Japanese DJ gives us one of the best takes yet, in my opinion. You have to remember, we’re pushing a 400 song count, so anything that isn’t a straight cover will make an impression. +1 to I’m So Look You!

I’m So Look You – Last Christmas

Here’s another great one by German (!!!) Michael Jackson impersonator, Giuseppe Ruisi that merges “Last Christmas” with “Billie Jean!” A total protonic reversal! I think MJ would have been proud. Also check out his appearances on Das Supertalent below.
