Delaa, Studio 99, The Christmas Angels

This is crazy, I think this is the only hip hop version to actually rap the original lyrics! SeƱor Delaa does his thing over the Human Nature version and other than that, we don’t know much about his cover.

Delaa – Last Christmas

This is very much like the original Wham! version, but slightly more current. Studio 99 are one those, well, studio bands, who release albums with covers of all your favorite hit songs. They have collections of Barbars Streisand hits, ABBA hits, the Venga Boys (I know!) pretty much anyone who has ever released an album, has a Studio 99 cover album.

Studio 99 – Last Christmas

You can find nearly 1500 Studio 99 covers on amazon

I think the Christmas Angels are similar to Studio 99 in that they only exist to release inexpensive covers (though only Christmas covers in this case) however, their arrangements are incredibly more interesting.

You can find their album Traditional Christmas Songs on amazon.com

And here is an updated version of the Wham vs. Modjo mix, which now includes Stardust (to it’s detriment I think)…

The Holy Night Orchestra, Bliss and Sugarcube

Jesus McMillan The Holy Night Orchestra by Jesus McMillan (maybe the best name ever?) deliver solid holiday party background tunes on their album “Merry Christmas.” This album is filled with mostly traditional holiday songs and “Last Christmas” and oddly enough “The Neverending Story”…

The Holy Night Orchestra By Jesus McMillan – Last Christmas

You can get the whole mp3 album on amazon.

We featured Sugarcube back in Year One and briefly mentioned the other versions available and Sugarcube’s danceability factor. Everything we said about them and their cover still hold true, but here are two more mixes.

Sugarcube Inc. – Last Christmas (Architechs Remix)

Sugarcube Inc. – Last Christmas (Cuva Remix)

If you’re a Sugarcube Inc. completist, you can buy this import single for $129…or you can download it for $4.95.

Bliss are a 6-piece vocal group from Switzerland and really pretty fantastic. Of all the a cappella covers we’ve featured, this may be my favorite. They have a weirdly funny/awesome cover of U2’s “With or Without You” to stream on their site, and perhaps best of all, an incredible delivery of the Golden Girls’ theme “Thank You For Being a Friend.”

You have to appreciate a band that has a sense of humor..

Leona Lewis, Country & Eastern Band, Vintage System

Leona LewisLeona Lewis didn’t really cover “Last Christmas” at least not to our knowledge. But someone did think her song “Bleeding Love” would sound interesting over “Last Christmas.” And there you have it.

Wham! vs. Leona Lewis – Bleeding Christmas

Despite being named Country & Eastern Band, this Swedish group is very jazzy, smooth, and even a bit mathrocky, but only just a bit. I picture Sarah McLachlan doing a show with Rock Action-era Mogwai. This comes from their 2007 set, Country & Eastern Christmas, with a bunch of other really awesome takes on traditional Swedish holiday songs available on amazon or from klicktrack.

Vintage System another solid house/dance/electronic/whatever version for those of you who like to dance your butts off every Christmas.

Vintage System – Last Christmas

and finally, here’s the video to the Nicotine version we featured in ’06.
