So, I’m not sure why I haven’t mentioned it before, but I totally love that line “I’ll give it to someone special.” It just seems like such an arbitrary dig. Obviously, he thinks the person he’s singing to is special, or else he wouldn’t’ve gone through all the trouble of writing a song, composing music for it, hiring a band to perform it, renting studio time to record it, etc., etc. It’s one of those things where the inner logic just doesn’t add up… and yet it’s somehow totally excusable.
Astute reader Angela T. pointed us to this version from Common Rotation.
Apparently they offer up free downloads every few days at The Union Maid, and this comes from the Dec. 22, 2004 post. Stick around for the 3-minute mark, to hear a bit of “Jingle Bells, Batman Smells.”
Common Rotation – Last Christmas
OK there are a lot of bands named Sugarfree. None of the ones we found online seem responsible for this version. Which is a shame because this one’s kind of difficult to categorize. It’s like Jimmy Buffet taught his nephew to play guitar, and then encouraged him to join Limp Bizkit, but Fred Durst kicked him out because he wasn’t cock-rocking hard enough, so Nephew Buffet started Sugarfree in an effort to make Mr. Durst “eat his words.” But that was too long for the “category” field in my itunes. Anyway, be sure to hang in there for his awesome whine-rap at the end.

This appears to be out of print, but you can scoop up a used copy on amazon.com

We thought we should pair Sugarfree and Sugarcube into the same day. Sort of a yin-and-yang of “Last Christmas.” Unlike Sugarfree’s version, Sugarcube Inc. are determined to make Christmas danceable… just like all the other dance versions we’ve presented. Of these two, the Garage Mix has more of a holiday spirit (they added some bells). These and a few other mixes are available on itunes and amazon.com
