Merry December! We’re super excited to have you visit again this year, and let us start by saying, THREE YEARS?! Who would have thought three years after starting our archive, we’d still be discovering covers of “Last Christmas” by the bucketloads? Certainly not us, that’s for sure. What began as slight bewilderment, and turned into a public display of compulsory ridiculousness is starting to turn into a tradition around here. And thanks again in part to our dear readers, this year’s collection is starting to rival last year’s in sheer quantity! To keep things interesting we’ve tidied up and shined our shoes and we’re handing out some goodies also. If you haven’t subscribed our new podcast, please do. Through it, we’ll send you Last Christmas HQ approved covers and a few new favorites to the pot for 2008.
And again, a reminder, all posts from past years do not have mp3 links anymore. Instead you can find the songs in our sidebar to the right. Also, since we are working with a new site layout, please email us if you discover any bugs or problems!
Let’s start things off by sharing a version we received at the tail end of last year’s posts which we didn’t get up in time.
Matt Hinton and Jesse Coombe (aka Darren and Spando) host a radio show which features an ’80s segment they call “Acceptable in the 80s.” This successful portion of the show led them to record covers in the style of their alter egos, one of which being “Last Christmas!” finally after nearly a years worth of hibernation in our inbox, here she is!
Darren Duran & Spando Bailey – Last Christmas
This is just the goddamned cutest thing you’ve ever heard. I just imagine little cococat begging her dad to record her singing her favorite christmas song, and him being all excited about arranging it because he used to dabble in music production but it never took off so he settled for teaching middle school music, happily though, but he still wishes he could be more involved in the industry…like I said, cute!
Cocodat Davis – Last Christmas
Lastly, we have this somewhat subtly epic acoustic instrumental version from Tokyo artist Tetsuya Kanda, who is one of the craziest guitar players I’ve heard. Check out some of the other tracks on his myspace to hear what I mean. His version is epic in the way that it’s the song you want people to play at your funeral, as the end cap to your totally epic life, or at least, this version would make your life seem epic if someone did their eugoogoly over it. EPIC.
