Summer Time!

Well, I must admit, I’m impressed. We haven’t updated since the day after Christmas and we’re still getting visits, comments, and even a couple new versions of “Last Christmas” in the ole email inbox (thanks also goes out to those who, in the spirit of giving, gave our inbox buttloads of spam).

This update is mainly for two reasons: 1) To inform you, dear readers, that we will in fact be back this coming holiday season with more “Last Christmas” for those of you that have perversely asked us for more, and 2) In the next few weeks, we’ll begin archiving the old posts into daily zip files. This also means that the individual song links will taken down, and replaced with the zip links.

So consider this our official 2007 call for covers! If your band, or you friend’s band, or your baby sister has recorded a version of “Last Christmas” send it our way! Even better, you have plenty of time before December to learn and record a version if you haven’t done so already!

Also, a couple months ago, Michiaki sent us translated lyrics from Wolke’s version (Wolke means “cloud’ he also shares), which are pretty close to Wham!‘s originals. We really are just excited that we have a summertime post, so here you go:

“My mothertongue is German and I understand a lot of English (except grammer rules nod), so I want to help you.
The first part is the german original text (it is a bit colloquial, so german students won’t understand it straight away.)
The second part is the english translation, with a lot of grammar mistakes, I guess. o-O Sorry for this.
Any tags with (…) are comments of mine for a better understanding, but don’ t belong to the original text.”

Deutsch:
Verbrannte Hand scheut das Feuer
Ich halt mich fern von dir
Und trotzdem fängst du meinen Blick
Sag mir, Mädchen
Weißt du noch, wer ich bin?
Ein Jahr geht schnell vorbei
Und ich dir aus dem Sinn
Happy Christmas
Hab’s verpackt und an dich geschickt (“hab’s” is a colloquial form of “hab es”)
Und auf dem Kärtchen stand:
Ich liebe dich
Jetzt ist mir klar
Was war ich für ein Idiot
Doch wenn du mich jetzt küsst
Dann würde ich wieder drauf reinfallen
Ein überfüllter Raum
Die Menschen sehen müde aus
Ich halte mich versteckt
Vor dir und deinem Blick aus Eis
Mein Gott, ich dachte
Dir könnt’ ich vertrauen
Ich
Ich war nur ‘ne Schulter zum Ausweinen
Ein Herz steht in Flammen
Und du lässt es Verglühen
Ein Mann steht im Dunkeln
Und du brichst sein Herz entzwei
Ja, du brichst mein Herz entzwei
Last Christmas
I gave you my heart
But the very next day
You gave it away
This year
To save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special
I’ll give it to someone special

English:
The burned hand shrinks from fire (it’s similiar to “Once bitten, twice shy”)
I keep away from you
But still you catch my eyes
Tell me girl,
Do you still know, who I am?
A year is over soon
And so am I -ripped out of your mind
Happy Christmas
I have wraped it and sent to you (sorry for any grammar mistakes-what I mean is to wrap a present)
And on the little card stood: (it is common to add a little card to ones present, where the name of the receiver and sender and a nice message is written down)
“I love you”
Now it is clear to me
What a fool (idiot) I’ve been
But if you kiss me now
I would fall for it again
An overcrowded room
The persons look tired
I keep myself hidden
From you and your glimpse of ice
My god, I thought
I could trust in you
I
I was just a shoulder to cry on
A heart burns from flames
And you let it cease glowing
A man stands in darkness
And you break his heart in two (or better: to pieces)
Yes, you break my heart in two
Last Christmas
I gave you my heart
But the very next day
You gave it away
This year
To save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special
I’ll give it to someone special
